When poverty, natural disasters and conflicts are prevalent, people become more prone to mental problems. In fact, more than 200 million people all over the world suffer from mental disorders today, most of which are suffering from depression.
There are several types of mental disorders. Organic brain disorders are common as they include cardiovascular disorders, drug and alcohol related symptoms as well as Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s disease which become more common in old age. There are also mood and anxiety disorders which are most common as they refer to depression and panic disorders. Meanwhile, personality disorders are a result of people’s inability to cope with stressful events and patients with such disorders end up behaving in an unusual or strange way that goes against society’s expectations. People with personality disorders tend to be anxious, absurd and even antisocial. Delusional individuals and those who mostly experience hallucinations are categorized as those who have psychotic disorders.
There are several ways to treat mental disorders as there are several ways to maintain one’s mental health. Psychotherapy involves the intervention of a mental health professional whereas medication would include the use of psychoactive drugs, mood stabilizers and even some stimulants.
In the same way that everyone is susceptible to mental illnesses, those with mental disorders could be treated and regain their normal lives. In most cases, a mental health community is most beneficial. People with mental disorders also need to experience living life with people in the community, which is mostly better than having them stay inside mental hospitals where incidents of human rights violation and even neglect are common.
Family therapy is well supported by a strong mental health community that could provide services that are integrated with the community’s primary health care system. This may be used to rehabilitate some mental hospital patients in the community whenever possible. Conducting anti-stigma programs which are aimed at educating the rest of the members of the community about people with mental disorders may also be necessary. Getting people with mental disorders to actively participate or join in such a community would render it a success.
In the same way that social networks are important in people’s careers, a mental health social network is also an integral part for any mental health recovery program. Such a network would consist of other people with mental illnesses, some volunteers, family members (who serve as caretakers) and even some health care professionals. Doctors give information and tips to help patients recover fast, whereas volunteers reach out to care and in some way, befriend those who belong in the social network.
What is good about it is that such social networks, as they exist online, provide members with anonymity and a safe environment. Geographical distance no longer becomes a barrier and those who join it will feel less isolated from the rest of the global community.
Members of a mental health social network share not only useful information but also experiences. Through this, people with mental illnesses could even help one another and feel empowered in having the ability to actually help other people.

The Importance of Social Networks in Mental Health Recovery
So much too commonly accompanying a mental breakdown, is total isolation and alienation from one’s former social network; such an environment of loneliness and detachment is way from conducive to mental health recovery. The development of sturdy, progressive, and proactive social networks is instrumental for those full of a mental illness of any kind.
