The brain is the control centre for the whole of the body so it is an important part of us. In order to live, our brain needs to function properly for us to be able use our motor skills like walking and running, so that we can use our hands for everyday things. The brain also controls our feelings and emotions.
Throughout life, we will experience a range of emotions that affect how we feel. We all have happy times, and we also have times when we feel sad or depressed. This is just a natural reaction of our environment. There are things that will please you so that you feel happy, and at the other end of the scale, bad things can happen to make you feel down.
At times, a brain disorder can affect a person so that they are unable to control their emotion. In these cases, a person is usually diagnosed as having Bipolar Disorder; this brain disorder will affect your emotions and your moods. This illness gives you little or sometimes no control over your emotions, so that they fluctuate at different levels. Bipolar sufferers will often feel depressed for no reason at all, and trying to cheer them makes no difference to how they feel. Mood changes can be seen from extreme euphoria where a person is very elated and their energy levels gradually increase.
It is a normal for a person to change moods, but in Bipolar Disorder these changes happen at intervals. They can be depressed one moment, and all of a sudden they are very happy without reasoning.
Bipolar Disorder symptoms are classified into two sections. The first being manic episodes, and the second is episodes of depression. Manic episodes are where a person suddenly has a surge in energy, are irritable, aggressive behaviour, lacks concentration due to racing thoughts often switching from one subject to another rapidly, extraordinary beliefs in their abilities and powers, alcohol and drug abuse, and denial that they are ill.
Depressive episodes in a person with Bipolar can experience periods of sadness for a long while, feelings of emptiness, guilt or that they are worthless, hopelessness, irritability, loss in drive to enjoy their usual activities, insomnia or needing lots of sleep, thoughts of death and suicide. In some cases, a person reached a point where they want to attempt suicide.
As signs and symptoms of Bipolar Disorder fall under two classifications, it is also given the name manic-depressive illness because of the associations. A person’s social life can be greatly affected by the constant mood changes of Bipolar Disorder. They are unable to perform at work or study. A person may also find that they make and lose friends quite easily when they see how they behave. Not everyone is supportive or understanding.
It is important to remember how serious an illness Bipolar Disorder is, and how careful managing it should be to be treated successfully. If any signs and symptoms show, no matter how little, help should be sought immediately for Bipolar Disorder. Today offers many good treatments in medication and psychotherapy.
Psychotherapy aids a patient to work through their day-to-day problems and see what has caused any mood changes. This helps an individual to feel more at ease to share their experience and increase their wellbeing. It assists them to find ways of coping with their emotions better. In cases, where a patient needs more than psychotherapy, a doctor can prescribe medication for Bipolar Disorder to bring an individual’s emotions back to normal. The following are mood stabilising medications that are available which are effective in treating Bipolar Disorder:
. Lithium
. Anticonvulsant medications – e.g. Lamotrigine, Valproate
You will usually be referred to a psychiatrist before being prescribed medication for your illness, so that you can be fully assessed professionally and so that you can be advised on any possible side effects from the medication. Known side effects for different medications include anxiety, a dry mouth, hair loss, a reduced sex drive, tremors, and weight gain or loss.
As of yet, there is no effective cure for Bipolar Disorder, as the causes have not yet been fully established. Medication and psychotherapy is a long term treatment as is the illness, which help a great deal, so much so that many are able to lead a normal life.
